Abstract Summary

Living kidney donation is now the major form of transplantation in North America. For various reasons most kidney donors are women. Female donors often ask their doctors whether donation will have any effect on their future pregnancies. The kidneys regulate salt and water in the body, and it is possible women with one kidney will have more blood pressure difficulties during pregnancy than others. In Ontario we are able to study this issue using large health care databases, and data from the Trillium Gift of Life Network. We will compare the pregnancy outcomes of kidney donors to similar healthy people who do not become kidney donors (who we call controls). We expect to study about 180 pregnant kidney donors and 1800 pregnant controls. The information from this study will help people make informed decisions about living donation. It may also guide health care which prevents health problems in pregnant donors.
