Abstract Summary
As many as 2/3 of women with substance use problems report a concurrent mental health problem-often related to experiences of abuse - yet integrated and comprehensive treatment for girls and women with co-occurring mental health and substance use problems has not been implemented in Canada. This Team will build on data and experiences in the United States with trauma-informed approaches, to develop a multi-sectoral knowledge translation and engagement model for research on the co-occurrence of and systems responses to, trauma, substance use and mental health disorders amongst girls and women. The Team will work to shift clinical, policy and overall healthcare system responses to address the co-occurrence of trauma and violence, mental health, and substance use problems among girls and women, with the goal of improving the effectiveness and responsiveness of current treatments, tailored to the Canadian context.
