Abstract Summary

People living with HIV (PLWH) have a higher chance of developing lung disease similar to people who have smoked for a very long time. We believe that PLWH age faster than people without HIV and that this aging occurs in their lungs to increase their chance of having lung disease. We will use new imaging machines now available to look at what injuries PLWH have in their lungs. We will then use a procedure called a bronchoscopy to collect cells from these injured regions of the lung and use new techniques to look at their cells' makeup and behaviour down to each single cell. Finally, we will test whether some of these injury markers in the cell can help predict bad events in PLWH such as deaths and hospitalizations. Together, this information will allow us to see how PLWH age in their lungs and what the effects of this aging process are on the development of lung disease.
