Abstract Summary
Despite the enormous burden of disease attributable to harmful drug and alcohol use, major challenges remain in implementing evidence-based interventions for substance use (SU) and substance use disorders (SUD). While notable research advances have been made in understanding effective pharmacological and psychosocial approaches to SUD, many evidence-based approaches remain under-utilized. Pragmatic clinical trials and clinical implementation science research can identify new interventions and facilitate scale-up of effective interventions to maximize population impact. Given our accomplishments over the past 6 years, the BC Node is ideally positioned to maintain its role as the hub for the BC network and partner to the other regional Nodes. Our team includes a diverse network of knowledge users, service providers, representatives of the affected community, decision makers, and research scientists, which makes us well-suited to undertake collaborative research and implement evidence-based approaches to substance use. Building on past achievements and utilizing our vast research and training infrastructure, we seek to fulfill the following objectives for the next phase of CRISM: -Support the improvement in the quality of care and quality of life for people with SUD -Identify and/or develop effective and scalable clinical and community-based prevention and treatment interventions and guidelines, including harm reduction, for SU -Provide evidence to decision makers and service providers to enhance prevention and treatment services, as well as policy development, regarding SU -Engage Indigenous Peoples in research and knowledge translation (KT) efforts in a manner respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous self-determination and self-governance -Involve individuals with lived and living experience throughout network activities -Develop training programs to build research capacity -Develop a methamphetamine use disorder treatment randomized clinical trial
