Abstract Summary
Background: With over 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, this disease has significant impacts for residents living in long-term care (LTC) settings. Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are digital technologies that may be used to improve mood and decrease agitation among residents, providing some relief to caregivers. However, more research is needed to better understand the residents', families', and staff members' experiences of using this technology in LTC settings. The goal of our research is to explore the thoughts, preferences, and needs of using AR/VR among residents and their families, and staff members. Methods: We will ask 60 participants from two LTC homes to participate in our study (20 residents, 20 family members, and 20 staff). These participants will share their thoughts and experiences through interviews and focus groups before and after implementing the AR/VR technology. Data analysis: The participants' feedback collected through the focus groups will be audio-recorded and transcribed word for word. Our research team includes patient partners, and together, we will analyze the transcribed data. This data will then be organized into categories and themes. Significance: Findings from this study will provide a better understanding of the experiences and attitudes of using AR/VR among residents, families, and staff. Our team will then identify any lessons learned in adopting AR/VR in LTC settings which will be useful for future research.
