Abstract Summary

Bias can negatively affect nurses' decisions and the care that patients receive. Thus far, comprehensive research on bias in healthcare has mostly focused on physician's diagnostic errors. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare providers and have a significant impact on patient care and experience. The increased use of electronic health records has created a large amount of data that could enable nurse researchers to better understand how bias and stigmatization affects patient care and patient outcomes. The purpose of this planning grant is to establish a new research team to study bias and stigmatization in nursing practice. This research team will include a patient advisory council, health data custodians, and nurses in practice and leadership positions. This planning grant will bring together the research team to provide input on future research project priorities and processes.
