Abstract Summary
More than 8.3 million adults and about 25-30% of Canadian children and youth live with obesity and could benefit from medical support to manage their obesity. Obesity is recognized as a chronic disease by the Canadian Medical Association however unlike other chronic diseases, a coordinated strategy to provide the best treatment for individuals living with obesity does not exist in Canada. Obesity Canada is a registered Charity and has proposed to host a meeting to address this issue. This proposal is to support a meeting to be attended by health care professionals, policy makers, individuals living with obesity, and researchers to work together to develop and coordinate a National obesity care framework. This framework will guide a strategy by which Canada can improve the health of Canadians living with obesity, reduce the risk of developing obesity and reduce health care costs associated with obesity.
