Abstract Summary
Oral health is a vital component of health and well-being. The consequences of poor oral health extend far beyond the mouth and include reduced quality of life, malnutrition, and the development of systemic diseases such as diabetes. There is also emerging evidence suggesting a complex interrelationship between oral health and frailty. Current diagnosis and management of frailty does not include measures of oral health. Similarly, there is little evidence to suggest that diagnosis and management of oral health considers the impacts of frailty. The aim of this project is to develop and strengthen research capacity, both regionally and nationally, that focuses on exploring the critical reciprocal relationship between oral health and frailty. Our multidisciplinary research team is well positioned to bring together national representation including health researchers, knowledge-users (e.g., clinicians and members of government), and patient partners to identify research priorities. This engagement will guide us in research grant development in the short term. In the long term, it will provide a foundation for developing a program of research and enable translation of research findings into meaningful clinical guidelines and health policy to: 1) improve early detection and management of frailty related to oral disease and disability and 2) advance strategies that will address the impact of frailty on oral health needs.
