Abstract Summary

With an aging population, there are increasing concerns over health system capacity. Falls are a leading cause of hospitalization among older adults in Canada. Falls contribute to over $8.7 billion(CAD) annually in healthcare costs and lead to lasting physical and emotional injuries that can be challenging to recover from. Researchers have examined falls from multiple angles, looking at risk factors for falls, the effectiveness of programs for preventing falls, and how to best implement these fall programs. Despite these promising developments, falls remain a major and growing concern. Missing in the existing body of evidence on fall prevention is the lack of patient, caregiver, and clinician input. Incorporating these perspectives can help improve the research process and provide unique insights. This project will bring together older adults, caregivers, and clinicians to identify national research priorities on fall prevention. Identifying research priorities with individuals with lived and clinical experience has the potential to increase efficiencies and the overall impact of ongoing fall prevention efforts.
