Abstract Summary

Exercise plays a supportive role across the cancer care continuum, addressing symptom and treatment-related negative impacts. While the burden of such impacts may be substantial for all individuals living with and beyond cancer, there are inequities leading to disproportionate burden among specific populations. Individuals who identify with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, queer, and/or intersex (LGBTQIA2S+) are clinically underserved. The LGBTQIA2S+ population specifically experience health disparities related to stigma and discrimination; furthermore, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals diagnosed with cancer experience inequalities throughout the cancer care continuum. This population is also understudied and underrepresented in exercise and cancer research, and thus do not realize the potential supportive cancer care benefits from exercise programs. In order to address this inequity and the resultant disparity in health outcomes, it is necessary to assess exercise preferences, barriers, and facilitators for exercise participation for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals living with and beyond cancer. Ensuring exercise as a supportive cancer care resources is accessible and inclusive for all individuals living with and beyond cancer will address the coordinated efforts that needed to improve patient-centered cancer care for marginalized populations.
